Chapter 4. VIEWING SEARCH RESULTS

Filtering Search Results

The left column of the Continuous Brief Browse (CBB) display shows a list of categories containing filters (facets) found within the results set. A facet is a distinct feature or aspect within a results set, or a way in which an item can be classified. These filters let you narrow the existing search results by “drilling down” deeper into the existing results set. Facets can be cumulatively applied to a results set in any order.

To filter your search results:

  1. Perform a Quick Search, or Advanced Search of your library’s database for the desired search term(s).
    • The screen refreshes to display the Continuous Brief Browse (CBB) display. The CBB display shows the “brief browse” list for your search.

  1. The available filters (facets) are shown in the left column of the CBB display.
    • Filters are organized under category headings, such as Formats and Subject.

NOTE: The specific categories available are defined by your library.

    • Each category can be expanded to show a list of filters, such as Books or Visual Materials, which can be applied to the current search results set to narrow the results. The total number of titles associated with each filter is shown in parentheses following the filter name.
  2. Click a category name to expand the category and view the filters available for the category. Scroll the page as necessary to view the entire list. Click the category name again to collapse the category.
    • If there are more than 8 filters in the category, click the Show More link to view the full list. Click the Show Less link to return the list to the top 8 filters.
  3. Select the checkbox checkbox for a filter to limit the search results to only those titles associated with the selected filter.
    • The CBB display refreshes to show only those titles associated with the selected filter.
    • A “token” for the selected filter is added to the “filter” string at the top of the CBB Display.
    • The available categories and filters refresh to show only those categories and filters available for the “filtered” results set.
  4. Use the Date text boxes to specify a custom date range filter. Click the Apply Range button Date Range Button to apply the filter to the search results.
    • To limit search results to a single year of publication, enter the desired year in either text box.
