AUTHORITY CONTROL

Chapter 2. AUTHORITY CONTROL

VERI

VERI checks the eligible headings that are not checked by CASCADE. VERI uses the entire heading field from the bibliographic record when searching for a match in an authority record. VERI processing is performed in a similar manner to CASCADE, except the Drop Rightmost Subfield operation is excluded, and the following Uniform Title Processing operation is performed:

  1. Uniform Title Processing

Uniform titles associated with a main entry (1xx tag) in the bibliographic record are coded in tag 240. Collective titles are coded in tag 243. Uniform title processing allows for validation of 1xx/24x tag combinations. Uniform title processing is performed after validation of 1xx tags as described above.

All subfields are stripped from the 24x tag, and the text is reformatted into a single subfield (tagged as $t). Subfield $t is appended to the text of the previously validated 1xx tag, which is then compared against LC combination authority records.

Matching headings may be found as either the preferred form (in the 1xx tag of the authority record) or as a see from reference (in the 4xx tag of the authority record). If the combination heading matched the preferred form, the text of the $t portion of the 1xx tag in the authority record replaces the text of the 24x tag in the bibliographic record. If the combination heading matched the see from form, the text of the $t portion of the 1xx tag in the authority record replaces the text of the 24x tag in the bibliographic record.

If no match is found for the combined heading in the bibliographic record, the 24x tag remains as it was and the message “No Headings Matched” displays following the heading in the bibliographic record.
