CHAPTER 2. LOGIN AND LOGOUT

   

 


Logging In (SIP2 / NCIP Authentication)

Use the following procedure to login as a staff member at libraries/systems that use Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP2) or NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol (NCIP) authentication.

To login:

  1. Click the Please Login link.

  1. Select the library you wish to log in to from the Select your library menu.

    NOTE: The Select your library menu feature is optional, and may not be enabled for all systems.

    • Click the Select Your Library menu to open the menu.

  • The Select Your Library menu shows the library code and library name for all libraries in your consortium or collective.

  1. Click the Staff button to access the system as a staff user.
    • The Login Screen displays.
  2. Enter your user name in the Username text box.
    • If your library has enabled “nickname” functionality and a Nickname is included in your User Record, you can optionally enter your “nickname” in the Username text box.
  3. Enter your password in the Password text box.
    • Your password will display on the screen as a series of bullets.

      NOTE: In some cases, libraries may assign the default password “USERPASS” or “STAFFPASS” when creating an account for a new user (library patron or staff member). When you log into RESEARCHit, SHAREit or VERSO for the first time using the default password “USERPASS” or ‘STAFFPASS”, you are prompted to provide a permanent password to complete the login process (see Entering Your Permanent Password for details).

  4. Click the Submit button to submit your Login request.
    • If your library provides access to third-party databases that require cookies for authentication, and your browser’s Privacy/Security settings are not sufficient to accept cookies from third-party databases, an advisory “Cookie Settings” message displays.
      • If you wish to ensure access to third-party databases that require cookies for authentication, adjust your browser’s Privacy/Security settings, as needed, then click the Continue link to complete your login.
      • If you do not wish to change your browser’s Privacy/Security settings, click the Continue link to complete your login.

        NOTE: If you choose not to adjust your browser’s Privacy/ Security settings, searches of any databases utilizing “cookie authentication” will fail.

    • FOR VERSO SYSTEMS ONLY: If your library uses the optional Staff Login Management functions (see the User Administration User Guide for more information), and you are currently logged in under another active session, the Login Screen refreshes to show the message “You are already logged in on another session. Would you like to terminate that existing session and log in here?”
      • Click the Yes link to terminate the existing session and complete your login request.
      • Click the No link to cancel your login request.
  5. If your Login request is unsuccessful:
    • FOR VERSO SYSTEMS ONLY: If your library uses the optional Staff Login Management functions (see the User Administration User Guide for more information), and the maximum number of concurrent logins at the library has been reached, the message “Maximum number of logins at (library code) has been exceeded. The following staff members are currently logged in: (staff member list).” You cannot log in at this time.
    • FOR VERSO SYSTEMS ONLY: A consortium that has “shared patrons” enabled can optionally be configured to prevent library staff from logging in to any library other than their home location. When this option is enabled and you attempt to login to a library other than your home location, an advisory message shows briefly at the top of the screen.
      • Click the Staff button on the Select Login Type screen to return to the Login Screen.
      • Check your library selection. Make any necessary corrections, then click the Submit button to resubmit the form.
    • Libraries can optionally be configured to restrict library staff from logging into the system from outside the library (outside of a specified IP range). With this new option, When this option is enabled and you attempt to login from a workstation outside the designated IP range, an advisory message shows briefly at the top of the screen. You cannot log in from your current location (workstation).
    • If you enter an invalid Username or an invalid Password, the message “Invalid Username or Password” shows briefly at the top of the screen, and the Select Login Type screen displays.
      • Click the Staff button on the Select Login Type screen to return to the Login Screen.
      • Check your library selection, Username and Password. Make any necessary corrections, then click the Submit button to resubmit the form.
    • Click the Forgot Your Password link to request a copy of your password via email.

      NOTE: The Forgot your password feature may not be enabled for all systems.

      • The “Forgot Your Password” panel opens.

  • Select the library with which your user account is associated from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter your username in the associated text box.
  • Click the Send button. When you receive your password, make any necessary corrections to your library selection, Username and Password, then click the Submit button to resubmit the form.

NOTE: If an email address is not included in your user profile, you cannot use the Forgot Your Password feature.

NOTE: If you enter an invalid library and username combination, the message “Library and username combination is invalid” shows briefly at the top of the screen. Click the Forgot Your Password link and resubmit your request as needed.

  1. If your Login request is successful:
    • The system displays the default opening page for your user account.

      NOTE: The default opening page for your account can be set through the Your Preferences function in the Your Account menu (see the RESEARCHit Search User Guide or VERSO Search User Guide for details).

    • Appropriate links and buttons are added to Brief Browse Lists and Full Record Displays throughout the system.
