Chapter 5. PATRON INTERLIBRARY LOAN

Using the ILL Request Form

The ILL Request Form lets you prepare and submit your request while online — no paperwork is necessary. Bibliographic information for the title you are requesting is entered automatically at the top of the form.

NOTE: Fields identified with a red asterisk must be filled in. All other fields are optional. To reset the form to its initial conditions, click the Reset button.

NOTE: The Request icon Hold Icon and Request This Item button may not be available for items of certain material types as determined by your library.

To submit an Interlibrary Loan Request:

  1. From a Brief Browse List, click the Request icon Hold Icon for the title you wish to borrow,
    or,
from a Full Record Display for the title you wish to borrow, click the Request This Item button.

NOTE: If you have accessed the system as a “guest” and your library requires you to log in before submitting ILL requests, a Login Form displays. Enter your username and password in the Username and Password text boxes (your password will display on the screen as a series of bullets). Click the Submit button to submit your Login request. See Logging In for additional information.

    • For libraries using the standard Request This Item function: The system searches the current bibliographic record for potential lenders for the title.
      • If the title is not held by a library registered as a potential lender for your library, the message "Your ILL request cannot be submitted at this time. None of the other libraries holding this item are currently registered as a potential lender for your library." displays. Click Go Back to close the message and return to the Full Record Display. If desired, you can use the Blank Request form to submit a request to borrow the item (see Using the Blank Request Form for details).
      • If the title is held by a library registered as a potential lender for your library, the ILL Request Form displays.

NOTE: If the title you wish to borrow is owned by your library (the library under which you logged in) and your library has enabled “owned by this library” notification, an advisory dialog displays the message “The item you’re requesting is owned by your library. Please check on its availability before submitting this request.” Click the Continue button to continue submitting the request, or, click the Cancel button to cancel the request and check to see if the item you wish to borrow is currently available at your library.

NOTE If your library has enabled ILL Request Limits (see ILL Request Limits for details), and you have reached the limit for your account, an advisory dialog displays the message “You have reached your maximum number of ILL requests. Please contact library staff to review your options.” You cannot place an ILL request until your number of active requests falls below the limit set for your account, or until a new “time period” begins.

  1. Select the desired request type:
    • Click the Returnable (loan) link at the top of the form for a borrow request.
    • Click the Non-Returnable (copy) link at the top of the form for a photocopy request.

NOTE: Access to the Non-Returnable (copy) option by library patrons/guests is optional, and may not be enabled for all libraries.

NOTE: If your library has enabled the “Copyright Confirmation” feature, a “Copyright Confirmation” message displays when you select Non-Returnable (copy) as the request type. You must acknowledge (accept) the Copyright Statement when submitting your copy request. Click the Yes button on the “Copyright Confirmation” message to accept the Copyright Statement and continue with the request. Click the Cancel button on the “Copyright Confirmation” message to cancel the request.
