Branch- and Collection-Level Checkout Limits

"Location-level" checkout limits allow you to override the "library-level" default checkout limits for a specific library location (branch or collection). When setting "location-level" checkout limits, it is necessary to set only those checkout limits you wish to differ from the default limits. Checkout limits for all other patron category/material type combinations should be left blank. "Location-level" checkout limits may be used to specify either a higher or a lower limit than those defined by the “library-level” checkout limits.

In Example E, the “library-level” checkout limit for material type Book has been set at "2" for all patron categories, and the All Types Combined checkout limit has been set to "4" for all patron categories. The "Branch 1" checkout limit for material type Book has been set at "3" for all patron categories, and the All Types Combined checkout limit has been left blank. In this case, a patron may check out a maximum of two items of material type Book from library locations other than Branch 1; a patron may check out a maximum of three items of material type Book from library Branch 1 only.

If a patron currently has two books checked out from any library location, and attempts to check out a third book from any library location except Branch 1, the "library-level" checkout limit will cause the Over Checkout Limit warning to display. However, if the patron attempts to check out a third book from Branch 1, the "location-level" checkout limit is referenced, and the checkout is allowed (the Over Checkout Limit warning does not display).

In most cases, if you set a "location-level" checkout limit for a material type that is greater than the “library-level” All Types Combined checkout limit, you should also specify a "location-level" All Types Combined checkout limit to accommodate the material type limit.

In Example F, the “library-level” checkout limit for material type Book has been set at "2" for all patron categories, and the All Types Combined checkout limit has been set to "4" for all patron categories. The Branch 1 checkout limit for material type Book has been set at "5" for all patron categories, and the All Types Combined checkout limit has been left blank.

In this case, if a patron currently has four items of material type Book checked out from Branch 1, and attempts to check out a fifth book from Branch 1 (as allowed by the "location-level" checkout limit for the material type), the "library-level" All Types Combined checkout limit is referenced (because no "location-level" All Types Combined limit was specified), and the Over Checkout Limit warning displays, even though the "location-level" checkout limit for Book allows five books to be "checked out" concurrently.
