Chapter 5. KIDS CATALOG ADMINISTRATION

Configuring “Categories”

The “Categories” section of the Kids Catalog (shown at the top of the Kids Catalog HOME page) lets you create pre-defined hierarchical “subject” searches that allow “single-click” searching of your library’s catalog. The “Categories” section can include both “categories” and “searches.” You can define up to three levels of categories/ searches:

EXAMPLES

Music (Level 1 Category)
    All Music (Level 2 Search)
    Classical Music (Level 2 Category)
        Bach (Level 3 Search)
        Beethoven (Level 3 Search)
        Brahms (Level 3 Search)
    Popular Music (Level 2 Category)
        Country Music (Level 3 Search)
        Jazz (Level 3 Search)
        Rock Music (Level 3 Search)

Categories and searches shown in the “Categories” section of the Kids Catalog are represented by both a textual description and graphic icon. You may choose to use a “stock image” as the graphic icon, or you can upload a custom image to use as the graphic icon.

When preparing an image file, keep the following in mind:

If you choose to create custom images, the system includes a “blank” background image (as well as “blank” topic images for animal, person, place or plant) that can be downloaded and used when creating images to ensure consistency between stock and custom images.

To download the “blank” background image:

  1. From the PAC Admin menu (see The PAC Admin Menu for details), select Kids’ Catalog Admin – Level 1 Categories.
    • The Level 1 Categories screen displays. The screen shows a listing of all currently defined Level 1 categories and searches.
  2. Click the Add New Level 1 Category link.
    • The Add New Level 1 Category screen displays.
