AUTHORITY CONTROL
Chapter 2. AUTHORITY CONTROL
Understanding The Authorize Command
The Authorize command is a comprehensive three-stage process combining the CASCADE, VERI and VERILEAD functions, enabling matches on every possible supported heading using one command. The system compares the field in which the heading is coded in the bibliographic record with the appropriate fields in the authority records (see How Authority Control Processing Works for details). Processing is accomplished in the following order:
- CASCADE is performed across all subfields in the bibliographic heading, dropping the last subfield with each pass until a match is found, or until only the lead element of the heading remains
- VERI checks for matches on the entire heading
- VERILEAD matches against the lead element of any unmatched fields
Each of these processes behaves like a filter, acting only on those bibliographic headings that were not successfully validated by the previous filter.
