Submitting an OpenILL Request

NOTE: OpenILL functionality is optional, and may not be supported by all systems.

OpenILL lets you submit ILL requests from an external third-party (non-SHAREit) catalog or electronic resource to your SHAREit system. When you click a Request This Item button or link to place a request, the SHAREit Blank ILL Request form opens in SHAREit. The form is pre-populated with bibliographic data for the requested item.

To submit an OpenILL request:

NOTE: Fields identified with a red asterisk must be filled in. All other fields are optional.

  1. Click the Request This Item button or link for the title you wish to request.
    • The SHAREit Blank Request Form displays. The form is pre-populated with bibliographic data for the requested item.
    • By default, the OpenILL function opens the Blank Request Form for Returnable (loan) requests. However, in cases where the bibliographic data for the requested item includes an article title and/or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), the OpenILL function opens the Blank Request Form for Non-Returnable (copy) requests.

NOTE: If your library has enabled the “Copyright Confirmation” feature and you are submitting a Non-Returnable (copy) request, a “Copyright Confirmation” message displays. You must acknowledge (accept) the Copyright Statement when submitting your copy request. Click the Yes button on the “Copyright Confirmation” message to accept the Copyright Statement and continue with the request. Click the Cancel button on the “Copyright Confirmation” message to cancel the request.

  2. Enter the appropriate information in all required form fields (see ILL Request Form Fields for more information).
  3. Click the Submit button to submit the ILL request.
    • If your Interlibrary Loan Request is unsuccessful:
      • If you enter incomplete information in the Blank ILL Request form or omit a mandatory field, a message indicating the required information displays briefly at the top of the screen. Enter the required information and click the Submit button to resubmit the request.
    • If your Interlibrary Loan Request is successful:
      • A “Success” message shows briefly at the top of the screen.
      • An ILL Request Confirmation screen displays summarizing your request, and indicating that your request has been accepted by the system.
    • If desired, you can print a copy of the ILL Request Confirmation screen (see Printing the ILL Request Confirmation for details).
    • If desired, you can view the status of your current ILL requests (see ILL Request Tracking for details).
    • Click the OK button to close the confirmation screen return to the screen from which you accessed the Request Form.
