Chapter 4. VIEWING SEARCH RESULTS
Using Continuous Brief Browse (CBB)
The Continuous Brief Browse (CBB) list shows search results for all resources included in your search. From the CBB list, you can:
- Set the display format for the CBB list; either “List” view or “Gallery” view
- Set the number of results shown on each page of the list
NOTE: Authenticated users can use the Your Preferences feature to set the default number of results to display per page (see Your Preferences for details).
- Combine (deduplicate) search results
- Sort search results by title, author, publication date or relevance
NOTE: Authenticated users can use the Your Preferences feature to set the default sort order for search results (see Your Preferences for details).
- Apply one or more filters to search results (see Filtering Search Results for details)
- Submit a reserve request for a title (see Placing Reserves for details)
- Submit an interlibrary loan (ILL) request for a title (see
the Circ-ILL User Guide
for details)
NOTE: ILL features and functions are available only for libraries using the optional Circ-ILL functionality.
- Save a record to a list (see Working with Lists for details)
- View and manage Active Alerts for your account (see Viewing and Managing Active Alerts for details).
- Share bibliographic information via text messaging (see Sending Bibliographic Information via SMS Text Messaging for details)
- Modify your search or perform follow-on searching using suggested Related topics.
To view the CBB list:
- If you selected to search multiple resources (see Database Selection for details), the message “Searching (#) additional resources” shows at the bottom of the CBB list. The message counts down until results have been returned by all resources.
-
The message "Page (#): Showing (record count) of (hit count) for (search term)"
at the top of the CBB list shows the number of results returned by the search,
where:
- # = the page number of the current page of search results
- record count = the total number of full bibliographic records returned by all databases included in the search
- hit count = the total number of 'hits' (occurrences of the search term) found in all databases included in the search
-
Click
the 'hit count' in the search results message to open a list of all
databases included in the search, along with the 'hit count' for each
database. If necessary, use the scrollbar to view the entire list.
- In cases where a resource has not finished responding, a “loading” indicator is shown in place of the ‘hit count’ for the resource.
- In cases where a resource has encountered an error in responding, a “warning” indicator is shown in place of the ‘hit count’ for the resource.
- Click outside the list of databases to close the list.
- In cases where your search does not return results (generally when a typographical error in your search term is suspected), the system may return results for a suggested “correct” search term.
-
For example, if the term "warshington" is entered, the system will show the message "There were no results for ‘warshington’- Showing results for ‘washington’" in the upper left corner of the CBB display and display results for the suggested term.
NOTE: “Showing results for” functionality is optional, and may not be enabled for all systems.
- o In cases where “Showing results for” functionality is enabled but a suggested “correct” term is not available, or where “Showing results for” functionality is not enabled and a search returns no results, a “zero results” message displays. Click the Modify Search button to open the Advanced Search screen (see Advanced Search for details) populated with the search criteria from your most recent search, including any applied filters associated with Search Qualifiers (Audience Level, Lexile, etc.) (see Filtering Search Results and Using Search Qualifiers for details). You can modify the search criteria and submit a new search.
-
The CBB list may be viewed in one of two formats; “Gallery” view or “List”
view.
- Click the Gallery View button to display the CBB list in “Gallery” view.
- Click the List View button to display the CBB list in “List” view.
- Each record in the CBB list shows a “book jacket” and brief bibliographic
information for the title, as well as the format (Book, DVD,
etc.) and number of items associated with the record. The brief record display
profile for entries in the CBB list is determined by your library, and may
include the Title, Author, Publisher, and publication
Date for the title.
NOTE: When shown in “Gallery” view, location and shelf status information for the first five holdings (alphabetically by library name) for a title can also be accessed from Brief Browse Lists by clicking the Show Locations link for the desired title.
- When the CBB list is shown in “List” view, the “Media Type” icon (see Media Type Icons for details) shown for each entry in the list indicates the media in which the associated title is available.
- When dosplayed in “List” view, the library name (Location) and current shelf Status of the item (Available, Checked Out, Patron Lost, Electronic Resource, etc.) are shown, and additional information for the holding such as the Call Number and Barcode for the item may be included.
- When displayed in “List” view, records in the CBB list may include the ISBN or ISSN for the title, depending on the currently active Group By selection.
- You can use the
Added In menu
to limit search results to items added within a selected
time period.
- Click the Added In icon , then select the desired time period; Last 18 months or Last 24 months. Select No Date Limit to return to the full set of search results.
- Search results are initially arranged according to the specified default
sort order for your account.
NOTE: Your library may specify a maximum results sort value between 1,000 and 20,000 results. Depending on the maximum results sort value specified and the number of results returned by your search, the search results may be unsorted.
- If your search returned fewer results than the maximum results sort value, you can use the Sort menu to re-sort the list. Select Relevance, Title (A-Z), Title (Z-A), Author (A-Z), Author (Z-A), Date (oldest first) or Date (newest first), as desired.
- Use the Group By menu to set the results grouping for the search
results. Select Clustered, Merged or None, as desired.
- When None is selected, search results are ungrouped. Entries in the CBB list include all content defined for the brief record display profile by your library.
- When Merged is selected, items of the same author, title, publisher and publication date are “merged” into a single entry in the search results. Entries in the CBB list will not include the ISBN or ISSN for the title when the CBB list is viewed in “List” view.
- When Clustered is selected, items of the same author and title are “clustered” into a single entry in the search results. Entries in the CBB list will include the Title and Author only for the title. Selecting a “clustered” title displays a secondary browse list of individual items for the title.
- Use the Results menu to set the number of results shown on each
page of the CBB list; 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100.
NOTE: The default selection for the Results menu is 40.
- In certain cases where Z39.50 targets are included in the selected search
resources, and results are not returned and displayed within a specified time
period, the screen includes an Additional Results Available message
displays at the bottom of the screen.
- Click Update on the Additional Results Available message to add additional titles to the CBB list. The additional results are combined with the currently displayed search results.
NOTE: If you change the sort order prior to adding additional titles to the CBB list, the additional titles are added to the list automatically, and the Add to Results Now button is removed from the screen.
NOTE: If you filter your search results prior to adding additional titles to the CBB list, the additional titles are added to the list automatically before filtering, and the Add to Results Now button is removed from the screen.
- When displayed in “List” view, CBB lists for Reference databases may include Full Text icons indicating that a “full text” version of an article is available.
- In some cases, the CBB list will include a list of Related topics, organized according to the index headings with which they are associated. Click a Related topic link to perform a search for the associated topic.
- If desired, use the “filters” panel to narrow the existing search results (see Filtering Search Results for details).
- Click a Hold icon to place a reserve request for the associated title (see Placing Reserves for details).
- Click a Request
icon
to submit an interlibrary loan (ILL) request for the associated title (see
the Circ-ILL User Guide
for details).
NOTE: The Request icon may not be available for items of certain formats or materials types.
NOTE: ILL features and functions are available only for libraries using the optional Circ-ILL functionality.
- Click a Save to Your List icon to add the record to a list for your user account (see Working with Lists for details).
- Use the scroll bar to scroll the current page of the list.
- Use the navigation bar to view other pages of the list:
- To view a specific page of the list, select the desired page number.
- Use the Previous Page button and Next Page button to scroll the list one page at a time.
- Use the First Page button and Last Page button to scroll to the first or last page of the list.
- To modify your search:
- The Related field (when displayed) shows a series of links for topic searches (Title, Author, Subject, etc.) related to your original search. Click a Related topic link to perform the associated search.
- Click the Modify Search button to open the Advanced Search screen (see Advanced Search for details) populated with the search criteria from your most recent search, including any applied filters associated with Search Qualifiers (Audience Level, Lexile, etc.) (see Filtering Search Results and Using Search Qualifiers for details) (this includes searches performed as a result of selecting a link from the Related field at the top of the screen as well). You can modify the search criteria and submit a new search.
- Click a “book jacket’” format link, Details icon or Available Online icon
to view the Full Record Display for the associated title (see
Full Record Display for
details)
- When Clustered is selected as the Group By option, selecting a “clustered” title displays a secondary title list of items for the title (see Title List for details).
NOTE: Once you have viewed the Full Record Display for a title and return to the Search Results screen, the color of the format link for the title changes from “blue” to “purple” to indicate the Full Record Display for the title has been viewed. The change in color remains active for the duration of your current session.
