Sorting and Normalizing Fields

AGCat lets you automatically sort all fields within an active record in numeric order, normalize (deduplicate) HLD tags, and toggle the display location of HLD tags to either the beginning or the end of the record.

To sort fields in an active record:

  1. Make sure the record you wish to sort is the currently active record.
  2. Select Sort Fields from the Edit menu, or click the Sort Fields button Sort Fields button in the Toolbar.
    • The active record refreshes to display all record tags in sorted order. Numeric tags are sorted in numeric order; HLD tags are sorted numerically/alphabetically by the most significant subfield specified in the normalization routine for your library (see Setting General Options for details).

NOTE: If the record contains multiple repeatable tags (e.g., tag 650), the tags are shown in the appropriate numeric position, but remain in the order in which they were originally listed in the record. If it is necessary to reorder repeatable tags, they must be repositioned manually (see Copying, Moving, Deleting and Restoring Text for details).

To sort HLD tags in an active record:

  1. Make sure the record you wish to sort is the currently active record.
  2. Select Sort HLD from the Edit menu, or click the Sort HLD button Sort HLD button in the Toolbar.
    • The active record refreshes to display all HLD tags in sorted order, according to the subfields specified in the normalization routine for your library (see Setting General Options for details).

    NOTE: The Sort HLD command does not deduplicate HLD tags.

To normalize (deduplicate) HLD tags:

  1. Make sure the record containing the HLD tags you wish to normalize is the currently active record.
  2. Select Normalize HLD from the Edit menu.
    • The active record refreshes with all HLD tags normalized (deduplicated) according to the subfields specified in the normalization routine for your library (see Setting General Options for details).

To change the display location for HLD tags:

By default, all HLD tags are displayed at the end of the record when the record is sorted. You can toggle the display location of HLD tags from the end of the record to the beginning, and back.

NOTE: If desired, you can set the default display location for HLD tags to the beginning of the record using the Display <HLD> before numeric tags option (see Setting General Options for details).
