Suspending Fines

The Fines Suspension function provides the ability to suspend fines during one or more specified time periods, allowing patrons to return or renew checkouts on overdue items, and/or report “lost” books without accruing fines and/or “lost book” fees.

To specify a fine suspension period:

  1. From the Circ Admin menu, select Circulation Parameters - Fines Suspension.
    • The Suspension Interval Management screen displays.

  1. Use the Start Date and End Date text boxes to specify the date range during which fines and/or “lost” book fees are to be forgiven.
    • Enter dates using the format MM/DD/YYYY, i.e., "01/01/2019".

NOTE: Be sure to include the slashes "/" when entering the Start Date and End Date. Do not include alphabetic characters when entering the Start Date and End Date.

      • You may also click the Date Entry Calendar icon Date Entry Calendar icon next to the Start Date and End Date text boxes to select dates using the Date Entry Calendar (see the System Basics User Guide for details).
  2. Select the Forgive Fines checkbox to suspend the assessment of overdue fines during the specified time period. Select the Forgive Lost Book Fees checkbox to suspend assessment of “lost” book fees during the specified time period.

NOTE: The Forgive Fines checkbox is initially selected by default. When Forgive Fines is selected, assessment of overdue fines is suspended during the specified time period for overdue items that are returned (checked in) and for overdue items that are renewed.

    • A checkmark checkmark indicates assessment of the associated fine/fee will be suspended during the specified time period.
    • An empty checkbox checkbox indicates assessment of the associated fine/fee will not be suspended during the specified time period.
    • Clicking the checkbox repeatedly will toggle it on and off.
  3. When the desired suspension interval parameters have been specified, click the Add link.
    • The screen refreshes with the specified suspension interval added to the list of Existing Fine Suspension Intervals.

To delete a fine suspension period:

  1. From the Circ Admin menu, select Circulation Parameters - Fines Suspension.
    • The Suspension Interval Management screen displays.
    • The Existing Fine Suspension Intervals field shows a list of all currently specified fine suspension periods.
  2. Click the Delete link for the suspension period you wish to delete.
    • The screen refreshes with the selected suspension period removed from the Existing Fine Suspension Intervals list.
